Understanding overnight drops

Our favorite correction method for lows is: GRAPES! We received that tip from a very dear t1d woman that is diabetic for over 70 years! She has no complications and told us to avoid juice or sugar for corrections but to use fruit instead. So most of our corrections are from fruit. We treat with grapes when he is trending down, slowly at 80... grapes will bring him up but with the fiber, they will not overly spike. Often we hear about 15 carbs corrections, but that’s too much for my son, and will overcorrect him. So we we try 5-6 carbs if he's mildly low. That is 5-6 grapes. We will use other fruits as well: apple, pear, banana (careful, that is super sweat). We also correct if he's going down with a single or double arrow close to 100 and still have "insulin peak time" to go. For my son, that time is 1 hour with Fiasp, and 1.5 hours with Humalog.  Now, when he has an urgent low, or that is too rapid below 80 we will use honey or mapple syrup 5 to 15 carbs because is j...

INTERVIEW WITH THE hONEYMOON BOY

Image
Early in his diagnosis, about June 2020, Jr wanted to share some videos with other type 1 kids. It took me a long time to edit the video, and is at the end of this post. This was filmed just 2 weeks  after leaving the hospital. We didn't know as much as we do know, so as you can see, we didn't prime before every shot.  In the hospital, we were told by the nurse that trained us to only prime the insulin pen with a new pen . Surprisingly, Many other parents are told this as well, I have no idea why.  Beware that manufacturer instructions say to prime your pen  every. single.  time. Really!  Many are surprise to find out and although many will black parents and the new overwhelming diagnostic, I have a witness (husband) and my son that both remember the same thing at training. Check this link out for the correct manufacturer instructions, if this is new to you:  http://pi.lilly.com/us/humalog-kwikpen-um.pdf  The second thing that changed since this v...
