Type 1 Diabetes, Diet and Gut Health
I'm copying my personal notes here, that I've been sharing with other parents. I want to make sure they have access to this info quickly. I won't expand much on them right now, but I'll return later to write more about each item.
My son was diagnosed in May 2020. In the middle of COVID, such a scary experience. One month after hospital stay he entered partial remission, then almost total remission. He's currently on 0 (zero) to 1(one) units of daily Humalog as needed and no daily basal insulin. He started with 11 units of Lantus and about 10-11 units of Humalog daily.
We are are are WFPBLO (whole food plant based low oil) and one thing I wish I could do right off Diagnosis was get him tested for food sensitivities. The hospital ordered some blood tests at diagnosis, for Celiac, the problem is those tests are not very sensitive. I believe he was missed. After much headache and playing with his diet, we finally did a stool test. It gave us great insight! I look back at all the symptoms And I can’t believe none of his doctors suggested further testing. The main issues my son had was constipation, weight loss and pain.
This is the lAb we used for food sensitivities. It’s more accurate than the blood test you see advertised everywhere, the owner is a gastroenterologist and I consulted with him to understand the results. The consultation was very affordable, although the lab tests were not. Some insurances will reimburse you for them. https://enterolab.com
Here's lots of information about Celiac and Gluten intolerance, please note the list of symptoms and that a NEGATIVE BLOOD TEST DOES NOT MEAN YOU DON'T HAVE CELIAC: https://www.beyondceliac.org/celiac-disease/get-tested/
Entero labs also tested my son for food malabsorption because he was STILL losing weight like crazy, even after receiving insulin.and it didn't make sense as his caloric intake was very appropriate. Leaky Gut was what all his labs were suggestion. We followed up with Dr. Joyce and Mercy Ballard protocol for leaky gut/auto immune.
If you have the resources do the entero labs testing do it. But if it’s too expensive for you you can read their book and try to eliminate the main inflammatory foods. Here's a link to the doctors free book telling their story and with many yummy recipes:,https://www.
She also had a free support group on Facebook

It’s great group, there’s a recipe there for easy to make (blender)! gluten free grain free bread! It's really delicious, easy to make and completely gluten free and free of inflammatory foods.
Did you know that there is a connection between Type 1 Diabetes and Gut health? Studies like this need more funding!
My final advice is

Keep preserving those Beta cells! May the honeymoon live on!
I'll keep trying to gather all my resources, but in the meantime, here are some random and great resources for links related to this topic woth short notes:
Honeymoon is a great thing. Although your doctor team might be annoyed to have to manage that....Science defines honeymoon as remission, partial or total And can last for years. I like saying remission better, it sounds more positive than honeymoon.
The more beta cell preservation (honeymoon) the less complications

Beta Cells preservation with time

The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) reported that a stimulated C-peptide value >0.2 nmol/L was associated with less hypoglycemia, retinopathy, and nephropathy
Type 1 diabetes not on insulin group (those would be the "honeymooners!).

This is an encouragement for vegan and WFPB type 1s
1) many journals and studies to look at 2) It’s nice to see anyone claiming that type 1 diabetes can go into remission, makes me excited! The video is life changing! And it made my head spin. This professor in Israel has other videos that talk about fecal transplants/gut health. We did not do that, but the implications for a healthy gut are very interesting. Watch this professors lectures on YouTube!!
